Different Media Theorys

Linear model - hypodermic syringe theory - outdated (40s/50s)
sender --> message --> receiver - It is injected and therefore will defintely be received.
A lot of people believe that propoganda is powerful in that people believe it.

Messages are now not believes because we as the audience have more of a say in the media now - this is called 'we media.' and this is due to 'web 2.0'
Us as the audience now know their technique and therefore we're not believing it whereas back in the 40s/50s we were unaware of their tricks.

Uses and gratifications theory - also outdated (50s/60s)
diversion -->      personal relationships -->  personal identity -->    surveillance
entertainment      aspire to their                    aspire to live like         nosey/gossip/
escapism             relationship                       certain characters        feeling like you are
(people make                                                                                    part of network
an internet page                                                                                 (people make the news using their
on)                                                                                                     mobile phones)

  • people have more complex relationships within the media.
  • a reason why it is outdated is because of interation.
Can we seperate people into specific groups or is this an artificial division?
Audiences are starting to bleed into one another because of the internet.

Goodwin's Theory

- A relationship between the lyrics and the visuals, with the visuals illustrating, amplifying or contradicting the lyrics.- A relationship between the music and the visuals, with the visuals illustrating, amplifying or contradicting the music.- Genre-related style and iconography present.
- Multiple close-ups of the main artist or vocalist.
- Voyeurism often plays a major part, especially in relation to females.
- Intertextual references to other media texts may be present.

1. Devlin - Let it Go - The lyrics and the visuals illustrates and amplifies the lyrics and music. It tells a story about a couple breaking up
- Multiple close-ups of the main artist or vocalist.
- There is scenes of a girl half naked - voyeurism
- I did not notice any intertextual refrences to other media texts.

2. Owl City - Fireflies - There is definitely a relationship between the music and the visulas - on each beat a toy/light lights up.
There is the odd link with the objects and the lyrics for example the 'disco ball hanging by a thread'
There is no voyeurism in this video and this is because the song isn't about a relationship, or girl etc. therefore there is no need for it as it would be irrelevant.
There is some intertexuality such as the record player and the fact that the toys somewhat resemble those out of the film 'Toy Story'.

The three different types of music video

Narrative- A narrative music video has a very clear beginning, middle and end. The actions tend to tell a story that match with the lyrics. The artist tends to be the protagonist ( play the most important role). It tends to use lip synching to tell a story. The narrative aids the visualisation of the lyrics and frames the artist as a narrator or participant, or sometimes a star. It illustrates, amplifies or contradicts the lyrics.
An example of this is Taylor Swift - Love Story.
Performance- A performance video shows the artists performing. This is usually used for a rock video to show thier enthusuiasm and their talent with the instruments.
Certain techniques are used such as close ups of the instruments.
Other elements can be used so that it isn't boring such as flashy shapes, lights etc.
An example of this is Little Boots - Remedy.
Conceptual- A conceptual video is one that doesn't contain a real meaning to it, it is very abstract. It may have elements of narrative, and may contain images that illustrate or contradict the lyrics.
An example of this is The Smashing Pumpkins - Thirty - Three
