Location Shots

Music - Tallis Morris - A Hundred Miles
My location, at the beach worked incredibly well. The tide was out and therefore there was a lot of space to film, with no other people in the shot and therefore it looked as though they were isolated. The ground was very wet where the tide had recently gone out, so when I had Hannah dancing the water flicked up, and when Jonny threw the bottles the water sprayed everywhere which were both really good action shots.

The natural lighting worked really well, until night time, where some of the shots are quite dark. We used artificial lighting on the beach in the dark to represent head lights which worked really well - especially in the shots where Hannah was dancing in front of the lights.

The shots in the house have worked well although the room was not really big enough to see in one shot. The lighting was quite dim but still worked well.

My Pitch For My Music Video

Audience Feedback from film pitches

From my feedback I have realised that I need to be careful not to make my music video a film and therefore need to make sure I fragment the shots, and add random shots to it. This will keep my audience more interested as it may make them slightly confused, and will hopefully make them want to carry on watching to see what happens next. Also on my storyboard I have planned to use the same shot quite a few times which would be seen as if I have just run out of footage which is not the case at all and therefore I will need to add a few more shots on my shooting schedule in order to make sure I have enough footage.

Item Checklist For Music Video Filming

Equipment and Props

I am going to use this sony camera during the whole day to show the making of my music video. The video will feature the way I do all the shots, the props I use, and the location etc. Once having all the footage of the day I will speed it up and make it into a short video to post on to my blog.
Another reason why this camera will be a good idea is because it can act as a back up incase the other one goes wrong. I have a 60 mintue tape for this camera.

This is the camera that I will be shooting my actual music video with. This also includes a 60 minute tape which may not be enough, so I have a spare just incase.
This is a car battery taken from a van so that I can have power on the beach. The idea of this is so that I can use artificial lighting - specifically for the headlight shot in my music video. I can also use the lighting then to focus of the people in the music video incase the natural lighting is too dark.
I am using glass and plastic bottles to create an effect of the artists walking on glass. This will also be used to signify the smashing of glass on the beach.
The sweets on the right match my house colours of red. They are going to represent the pills that the artist overdoses on and I am going to strap them to his hand with gaffatape.

I found this red ribbon like prop at a scrap store in Welwyn and thought that it would look nice around Hannah's black dress so that when she is dancing it will blow in the wind. It adds to the house colour of red and I am hoping that it will look very effective.

The picture below is actually the same piece of ribbon but will be used in a different way. I am going to wrap it around the artist's head to represent a blind fold. This shows that he is not in control of himself and if almost trapped.

This red frame like prop is also from the scrap store, and also carried on the theme of red. I had an idea of having a mid shot so that the red frame will be around the shot with Hannah in one square and Jonny in the other to represent how close they are but how they are never in the same environment.

I have used Flickr to show you my draft storyboarding. It includes a picture of each individual shot, the transition between them, the type of shot, the action, the props needed, the lighting needed, and how long each shot is shown for.

Inspiration for my music video

The aspect of Hannah dancing was inspired from Pixie Lott's music video to Cry Me Out. I found the dancing very emotional and it matched well to the music which is one of Goodwin's principles.

The reason for choosing the beach as my location for my music video was because of Demi Lovato's music video to skyscraper. I thought that this was a very inspiring video which really cuaght my attention due to the lonliness of her on the beach showing fear. I used her red heart in the glass box as inspiration too, but instead I used a red frame. I also used the aspect of my actor treading on broken glass.

I used Coldplay's video for inspiration for my idea of reversing what happened, so when he got up from falling over, to walking to the beach, etc. etc. I also used this to start my video with a aerial shot of Jonny's face.

My Draft Filming Schedule

As I have decided to film next Wednesday it means that I am having to plan my whole day quickly.
I am making sure that the day is planned really detailed so that I do not waste time and I can get every shot done to my best ability.

Goodwin's Theory - Intertextuality

Intertextuality.

Madonna

Intertextuality is when a music video includes scenes, or styles from a film, video game, or fashion and photography.
Marilyn Monroe

FILM
This video of Madonna Material Girl is a classic remake of Marilyn Monroe, Diamonds are a girls best friend, from the film 'Gentlemen Prefers Blondes.'.

It is interesting to know that certain directors, for example David Fincher started directing music videos before he did film - Madonna Vogue and Express Yourself.

TELEVISION

This music video is a spoof of a cop show titles sequence for Sabotage. It is by Spike Jonze in 1994.

This music video is an example of intertextuality from television as it is designed as a news show, and the lyrics are said by the new's reporters. These are very interesting themes for a music video as it makes you want to carry on watching to see what happens next.

VIDEO GAMES

This is a very unique way of using intertextuality, which is using grafics to create some sort of video game effect. I really like the way each band member has their own character too as it makes it more personal. It is very clever as it makes you feel like you are playing the game.

FASHION AND PHOTOGRAPHY

Fincher has used the use of super models (photography) in George Michael's video to show intertextuality. This makes the audience familiar with the music video as they see photo's of supermodels probably in their everyday lives.
Robert Palmer Addicted to Love (1986)

Shania Twain Man I Feel Like a Women (1999)

This is an example of fashion. Notice how they are placed i exactly the same way, and how the females have switched to males, and vise versa. So anybody that liked Robert Palmer in the 80s would be reminded of this by watching Shania Twains music video and therefore would probably really enjoy it.

John Stuart - incorporating, raiding and reconstructing.
Using something with which the audience may be familiar to 'generate both potentially nostalgia associations and new meanings. ( so reminding them of something )

In my music video I will be using a reference from the film Beautiful Mind, where there is a man with schizophrenia, and another actor playing the voice in his head.
