Different Media Theorys

Linear model - hypodermic syringe theory - outdated (40s/50s)
sender --> message --> receiver - It is injected and therefore will defintely be received.
A lot of people believe that propoganda is powerful in that people believe it.

Messages are now not believes because we as the audience have more of a say in the media now - this is called 'we media.' and this is due to 'web 2.0'
Us as the audience now know their technique and therefore we're not believing it whereas back in the 40s/50s we were unaware of their tricks.

Uses and gratifications theory - also outdated (50s/60s)
diversion -->      personal relationships -->  personal identity -->    surveillance

  • people have more complex relationships within the media.
  • a reason why it is outdated is because of interation.
Can we seperate people into specific groups or is this an artificial division?
Audiences are starting to bleed into one another because of the internet.
