Goodwin's Theory - Intertextuality

Intertextuality.

Madonna

Intertextuality is when a music video includes scenes, or styles from a film, video game, or fashion and photography.
Marilyn Monroe

FILM
This video of Madonna Material Girl is a classic remake of Marilyn Monroe, Diamonds are a girls best friend, from the film 'Gentlemen Prefers Blondes.'.

It is interesting to know that certain directors, for example David Fincher started directing music videos before he did film - Madonna Vogue and Express Yourself.

TELEVISION

This music video is a spoof of a cop show titles sequence for Sabotage. It is by Spike Jonze in 1994.

This music video is an example of intertextuality from television as it is designed as a news show, and the lyrics are said by the new's reporters. These are very interesting themes for a music video as it makes you want to carry on watching to see what happens next.

VIDEO GAMES

This is a very unique way of using intertextuality, which is using grafics to create some sort of video game effect. I really like the way each band member has their own character too as it makes it more personal. It is very clever as it makes you feel like you are playing the game.

FASHION AND PHOTOGRAPHY

Fincher has used the use of super models (photography) in George Michael's video to show intertextuality. This makes the audience familiar with the music video as they see photo's of supermodels probably in their everyday lives.
Robert Palmer Addicted to Love (1986)

Shania Twain Man I Feel Like a Women (1999)

This is an example of fashion. Notice how they are placed i exactly the same way, and how the females have switched to males, and vise versa. So anybody that liked Robert Palmer in the 80s would be reminded of this by watching Shania Twains music video and therefore would probably really enjoy it.

John Stuart - incorporating, raiding and reconstructing.
Using something with which the audience may be familiar to 'generate both potentially nostalgia associations and new meanings. ( so reminding them of something )

In my music video I will be using a reference from the film Beautiful Mind, where there is a man with schizophrenia, and another actor playing the voice in his head.
