Goodwin's Theory - Genre Characteristics

Genre Characteristics - These are applied to the type of music video it is, for example whether it is narrative, performance or conceptual.

Performance

This is an example of a perfomance video. It contains shots of the whole band performing, but also close ups of the instruments and the artits. This allows the artist to show their talent and their skills to perform live infront of an audience.

Narrative

In this video it shows how the lyrics link with he visuals, in that there is a story being told, and the visuals help you to understand it.
There are lots of close ups of the characters to help the audience to understand the characters.
The mise-en-scene and costumes are really important as it helps to set the scene.

Conceptual

A conceptual video is often comical with no story line at all. It contains unusual editing such as freeze frame etc. This specific video is very simple in that it is only taken in one shot, but the routine that they are doing is so difficult, and if they had made a mistake they would have to do the whole routine again from the beginning.

My own music video is going to be a narrative music video, but I need to make sure that I pull this off and make sue it doesn't look like a story. To do this I need to fragment it.
